In Kenya, we don’t have many young fashion designers who are bold enough promote their brands tirelessly. Instead, most of the girls have chosen to be models or just sell mitumba clothing. That’s not the case with Daliah Designs, a special fashion brand I discovered a few months ago.
Daliah Designs is a fast-rising fashion house based in Nairobi which was started by two proprietors, Paulynne Ochyearl and Makena Nyambura. They have been best friends for quite sometime. The first time I met them, they were like inseparable twins! The two smart, business-minded ladies are always working hard to improve their brand. Makena is also the Brand Ambassador for Best Lady Cosmetics.
The brand got its name from a beautiful flower. It’s all about fashion and making ladies look splendid. Their concept was inspired by the fact that they needed to look good but they found it kind of hard buying ultra – expensive outfits yet they could make some by themselves.
Their price range is from as low as 500 shillings to as high as 5,000 bob. They stock bandage dresses, bodycon dresses, two piece, skater dresses, Ankara, trousers, shirts and more. They are aiming to enter the Kenya fashion Week, Nairobi Fashion Market among others. In the mean time, they have been attending local fashion events and networking.
“Our fans have been really, really supportive. I must say thank you – especially our families – they’ve always been there for us. They’re are the first to ask for our designs when events are coming up. I’ve gotten the chance to design for a few family events. There was this time when my family and I traveled to Dubai and we rocked the outfits. Comments from strangers were just…out of this world!,” Makena revealed.
The two have received some recognition from Denim & Cateye, a top fashion blogger in the country. This shows that they’re doing things right. It’ll not be a long time before we see their designs in major supermarkets countrywide and top international outlets like Nordstrom.
